Increase Your Online Reach
If you’re like me, you’re disappointed when a resource or business you like doesn’t have any social media reach, where they connect with you where YOU are. From a business perspective, this is just one more lost opportunity to connect with a client. From a relationship building standpoint, the relationship barely exists. Case in point: How In their October 2008 edition, page 12, outline all these “online resources”, but they are all tied directly to their own website. With such tethering, it tells me they’ve really limited the reach they could have. Why no Twitter, why no Facebook? They have an online forum and a blog, but to me, that’s just standard outreach that should be expected. Even their own “Online Promotions” section never even mentions social media.
I’m not here to rip up on How…I really believe they are an awesome design magazine and they have a lot of terrific articles and resources to enjoy. What I would like to point out is how important it is to not overlook the obvious. That usually means doing a little homework to see what people are using as other resources online in your industry and being there and being engaged, not in the spammy way, but in a way that adds value, builds your brand, and most importantly, builds a two way dialog. It seems like a simple thing, but you’d be surprised how frequently businesses disregard the simple and gravitate toward the difficult instead.
How many paths are you creating for your clients to reach you? Implement as many as you possibly can, because I guarantee you, at this moment, your competition is thinking up ways to reach that same client.
