Deb Kolaras

I’m your average entrepreneur, having started my work adventure by selling pipe cleaner animals in my neighborhood at around 7 years old. Back then, it was easy, “Hey mister, you wanna buy this little animal for your kid?” Later on it was candy bars for band and wrapping paper for soccer. It was the school of hard knocks, but every so often, I’d win the contest for most sales. That experience toughened me up for the life ahead.

Over the years, I’ve seen the best and the worst in marketing, sales and customer service. I was fortunate to be trained in sales by people that thoroughly understood that in order to reach a customer in a real way, you needed to fulfill a need they had, doing so honestly, with integrity. I was being groomed in relationship selling before it was popular, and I embraced this concept well before social media told us this was “the way”. But the sale was only part of the process; if you didn’t take care of the customer, the deal was doomed. This I learned the hard way, by losing excellent clients because the internal operations were just not there. Working for myself seemed the only way to manage both the relationship and the deliverables. Before you now is a small business coach and a copywriter, and these two things blend together harmoniously in my work with clients, because let’s face it, writing and words are the backbone of communication and communication is ultimately the heart of serving and retaining customers.

So what do I bring to the online party? A culmination of a few decades of experience, a candor you might not always find in the business world, tainted with a little humor.  “Truthiness” is not my doing, that’s Stephen Colbert, but it’s a fun way of saying what I am always aiming for: telling it like it is with a smile and encouraging people to get to the heart of their passion. You’ll find some ideas, some perspectives, and some jabs, but you will always find an honest commentary. This space is where I share tips, ideas, disappointments, triumphs and basic observations of the business world.
