RamsgateIf you’ve started a business blog or are just thinking about starting one,  you have probably sat around on more than one occasion and pondered “What should I write?” It makes sense that this is often the first thing people consider; after all, a blog is nothing without its content. But, there is actually one thing even more important than what or how you write: Your audience. So before you think about writing your blog post… stop! It’s time figure out who you’re writing it for.

As wonderful as it would be to sit and blog about whatever comes to mind, the reality is that in order to be a successful blogger you need to tailor your content to a specific group of people you want to reach. Writing a blog for young women will be very different than writing a blog for middle-aged men, for example. We see many bloggers put in a considerable amount of time to write a well-crafted post, only to have it completely overlooked because it is aimed at the wrong people. Not only is this going to lead you to extreme frustration, but we’re also 100% sure that you don’t have time for this.

thank you buttonEmail can be a godsend or the bane of your existence. At its best, it’s quick, professional, efficient, eco-friendly, and simple way to share information, documents and links. If you’re using VOIP, it’s also an easy way to keep a handle on your voicemails (yeah, people do still use this form of messaging.) It might seem quaint to be talking about it, however in an instant-messaging society, our ultra-casual attitude tends to blur the lines between busy and just plain rude.I hate sending the “Did you receive…” email, just because someone was not courteous enough to let me know they did.

In the course of a week, I, like many of you, get several hundred emails. I have a lot of filters set up to help sort on the fly, but even so, I’m diligent about responding or handling these pieces of correspondence as quickly as possible, even if it’s just a “I’ll get back to you.” Why? Your time is as important as mine.Repeat: Your time is as important as mine. It’s a common courtesy to respond in some way, but this is not always the case; whether it’s carelessness or haste, many business emails I receive (or don’t receive) fall short in terms of any kind etiquette. Now seems as good a time as any for a email refresher moment:

poe

On this, the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday, I pondered this question. My guess would be “yes”, as it certainly would have been easier for him than bouncing about as he did over his short life. With a single place to share his thoughts, just think how many retweets we’d be enjoying!

Oh, and a disappointing word of note: The “Poe Toaster”, who’s been visiting the Poe grave since 1949 has not shown up this year to pay their respects.  I’ll do my part and toast Mr. Poe with some fine Ouzo, as his body of work lives on today and I’m so much richer for having some in my own library.
